Happy Anniversary Solera, Congratulations South Wedge

MGH and I stopped by Solera on Saturday to celebrate the wine bar’s first anniversary. I still have the e-mail from my friend JEM telling me that she discovered this great new wine bar in the South Wedge. When MGH and I moved back last December, she immediately brought us to this intimate and classic enoteca, introducing us to the owner John Fanning. Thursdays soon became “Solera Thursdays.”

John’s carefully crafted wine list changes regularly and always contains something new and interesting. Several wines we’ve been introduced to at Solera have found a permanent place in our home wine rack. The design of the bar is simple and elegant — taking advantage of the existing assets of the space (raw brick wall, dark wood floors, tall store front windows). Banquets, pillows and (in the winter) red velvet curtains make Solera somewhere you want to relax on a cold winter night with a exceptional glass of wine. (Believe me we have.)

It’s also excellent to see how the South Wedge has changed over the past year or so. On Solera’s block, Thread (clothing) launched this spring and :nook (housewears) opened in 2006. Boulder Coffee Company expanded over the summer and hosted the first season of a truly local farmers market. Also . If they have room in the small dining area, visit John’s Tex-Mex Eatery and enjoy the fish tacos. If they’re swamped, take them to go.
